The mission of the Bairnwick Women’s Center at Sewanee is to promote the understanding of gender issues through education, activism, and service. Our goal is to raise awareness and incite change in Sewanee by building an inclusive and respectful environment.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED...

Just come to one of our events!  Events are typically advertised through campus emails, posters, voicemails, and notices in the Mountain Messenger.  At the event, please introduce yourself to a Women's Center officer.  We'd love to have your help and involvement.

2007-2008 Women’s Center Board Officer Positions
 
Co-Directors of the Women’s Center at Bairnwick
Raisa Johnson '08 and Rachael Snow '08
 
The directors are the main contacts for the Center and serve to promote the interest of women students. Together with the Board and Officers, they play a special role in maintaining and encouraging use of the Women’s Center and improving social, intellectual, and recreational life for women on campus. The Directors manage the calendar and maintenance needs of the Center and meet at least weekly with Assistant Dean of Students Katie Steele and on an as-needed basis with academic advisor Dr. Donna Murdock. Lastly, One director serves as the House Manager while the other serves as the Officer and Board Manager. 
 
Conference on Women Co-Chairs
Jack Wyrick '10 and Will Gilbert '10 
Co-chairs are responsible for every aspect of the Conference on Women, from the initial concept and theme to forming and leading faculty and student committees. Conference co-chairs have special responsibility for coordinating officer input and duties. The Conference on Women takes place in February each year.  
Pinnacle Coordinator
Yekaterina Totskaya '09
Launching from the continued success of the Pinnacle series, the Pinnacle Coordinator finds new ways to introduce speakers and programs in which women share their experience and wisdom with others. The coordinator works with all officers to design the series and oversee its success. Coordinating speakers, food, dates, and times for Pinnacles are the responsibilities of this officer.
 
Communications Co-Chairs 
Fiona Maldonado '09 and Jennifer Juma '10
Recruitment, publicity, outreach, and communications are the primary responsibility of these two officers. The main responsibilities of this position are making and posting creative flyers & large banners on campus, and sending campus-wide voicemails & emails. This coordinator is responsible for regular coverage of Women’s Center events in publications such as the Purple and the Sewanee Mountain Messenger. Also, the PR coordinator is in charge of developing and maintaining the Women’s Center website.   

Special Events/Outreach Coordinator

This officer designs fundraising activities and coordinates outreach, community service events (such as the Race for the Cure dinner fall semester and Blue Monarch Fundraiser spring semester) and the co-sponsoring of events with other organizations (The programming board, academic societies, Gay-Straight Alliance, African American Alliance, Organization for Cross Cultural Understanding, Eco-House, Progressive Student Organization etc.) Other responsibilities include developing workshops such as Dr. Goldberg’s self-defense seminars and organizing social events (August Student Activities fair for first year students, First Year Student reception, Mimosa Mingler, etc.)
 
Bairnwick Archivist

The archivist takes minutes at each meeting, distributes them by email to all officers/advisors, and keeps a copy of all minutes. Other primary responsibilities include documenting events and gathering information and history on women at Sewanee and the Women’s Center for the purposes of establishing a historial record through scrapbooks.  Other duties include upkeep and organization of the Women’s Center library and reading room. 
 
Activism Coordinators
Kim Flemming '09 and Emily Lemon '10
Coordinate and support community and student led activism. Design activist projects and events including awareness campaigns. Organization of the Understanding Sexual Assault Week or Take Back the Night event is a primary responsibility for this position. Serve as liaison to campus and community organizations that serve to educate and inform such as the Cumberland Center for Justice and Peace, Gay-Straight Alliance, African American Alliance, Organization for Cross Cultural Understanding, etc. 

Kat Hauch '09 and Katie Thomas '09 will join the women's center leadership when they return from study abroad in Spring 2008.

General Officer Duties
A.     Participate in weekly meetings and program planning. Officers are expected to generate creative ideas for all programs and campaigns.
B.      Attendance at all Women’s Center functions is mandatory for officers.
C.      Assistance in set-up and clean-up before and after all events is required.
D.      Officers serve as hosts and ambassadors of Bairnwick and encourage the use of the Women’s Center by campus organizations and academic departments.
E.       As residents, officers must respect all rules and the privacy and comfort of fellow residents.
 

Pinnacle luncheons and other talks are held in our cozy living room.
OUR HOUSE

The women's center is a charming building located in the center of campus.  We have excellent space for hosting talks, dinners, meetings, and other special events.  The top two floors of the house are private, residential space for the leaders of the women's center.

We also have a great kitchen for preparing meals.  A large dining room, a library, the Anita Goodstein Reading room, and an all-purpose room known as the Mary Sue Cushman room.

To reserve a room at the Women’s Center, please call Jan Seigmund at (931) 598-1734 or Laurel Coffey ’07 at (931) 598-2726.  Student organizations, faculty, or staff who need to use the Women's Center for university-related business may use the Women's Center free of charge.   If an individual or an organization (fraternity or sorority, for instance) would like to host a party at the Women's Center, you must complete a rental contract with Assistant Dean of Students Katie Steele.  There will be a rental charge for such events.  If alcohol will be served at your event, you must submit a Party Registration Form to the Office of Student Activities.

From Nashville or Chattanooga:
Take I-24 to exit 134 for Sewanee and Monteagle.
Take Rt. 41-A towards Sewanee and The University of the South. Follow 41-A for approximately 5 miles.
After passing through the stone pillars marking the entrance to campus, veer right onto University Ave. Follow University Ave for approximately ¾ mile.
Turn Left onto Mississippi Ave.
After passing Benedict Hall, the Women’s Center will be on your left. Student and visitor parking is available around the building.
