1)  Just Connections Conference
--Save the Date!
The 3rd Biennial Just Connections Conference will be held June 8-10, 2007 at Ferrum College.  The theme for this conference is Connections to the Future: a Search for Just and Sustainable Community Models.  The “global economy” and “free trade” have created a bonanza for a small percentage of the population. But while a few grow rich, the cost for most is a breakdown in human relationships that has created a hunger for community. Since 1998, Just Connections has brought together community leaders, activists, students, teachers, and scholars to explore and advocate for democratic community models characterized by development and justice. Our research model, based on an equal partnership between campus and community, admits that the core knowledge about a situation resides in the community itself, and that community members are the most qualified to bring meaning to the application of research skills. Our biennial conference is an effort to draw others into the circle.  For more information, contact George Loveland at
gloveland@ferrum.edu.

2)  Teaching with ARTstor Workshop
January 10-11, Kentucky Christian University, Grayson KY

ARTstor workshops are appropriate for faculty across the disciplines, including (but not limited to) art, business, communication, education, history, literature, languages, music, philosophy, psychology, religion, sociology, theater, in fact, most of the arts, humanities, and social sciences. ARTstor offers approximately 500,000 images to use to promote stronger teaching and learning strategies through the use of visual learning techniques and stronger student engagement both in the classroom and during student study time.

This workshop starts with Dr. Sarah Purcell, Grinnell College, who has been teaching American History with ARTstor for several years. She will model how ARTstor has been interwoven with the teaching and learning systems employed in his/her classroom and coursework. A session follows, presented by an instructional technologist, on Visual Learning that focuses on visual learning styles and student engagement techniques to use in the classroom and for study
outside the classroom. Four sessions presented by an ARTstor Trainer step workshop participants through progressively more advanced technology at the ARTstor site. These sessions will introduce the scope of the collections and the software supporting the use of ARTStor images online, then investigate registered user capabilities, instructor level capabilities, and the use of the Offline Image Viewer.

Following the progression of training sessions on using ARTstor, Dr. Purcell will offer Tips and Techniques: A Voice of Experience, with strategies she uses as she prepares content using ARTstor within a course. This "how to" session brings the more abstract skills into focus with her instructional techniques from a "behind the scenes perspective. The final session of the workshop affords participants an opportunity to begin building instructor files for use in particular courses while the experts are available as an ARTstor Action Plan is developed. For faculty based at the host campus these files will be the base for ongoing work. For faculty visiting from another campus, these files can be transferred to the appropriate campus by the ARTstor Trainer following the workshop.

The workshop covers a great deal of material, and has a strong practical base with the expectation that participants will leave with materials that can be put into use immediately. The tools acquired and work begun at the workshop will provide a good foundation for continued growth in the use of ARTstor.

The workshop begins at 1pm the January 10 and concludes with a box lunch at noon on January 11. There is a short evening session (1-2 hours) following dinner on Wednesday night.  Registration and meal costs are covered by grant funds. If you attend a workshop that is not on your home campus, lodging will be provided and you will be reimbursed for your mileage to travel to the workshop.

To register for an ARTstor session, please contact Tony Krug by email, tonyk@acaweb.org. Registration requires your name, campus, discipline, campus phone, and whether you require vegetarian meals. If you are not on the host campus, will you need a non-smoking room? For questions, please email tonyk@acaweb.org or call 865-548-5450.

3)
Instructional Technology Assistants Workshop
The next Instructional Technology Assistants (ITA) workshop will be held on February 9, 10 and 11 in Abingdon, Virginia.  The ITA program is the ACA's much-requested program that pairs a faculty member with a student of their selection for a three day workshop on a variety of topics related to technology and instruction.  The faculty and student teams learn together such topics as Digital Video Editing, Google for Academics, and Digital Image Manipulation.  Following the workshop, students work for their faculty mentor to prepare various technology based projects for use in teaching.  Faculty members get much-needed help developing new teaching tools.  Students are eligible to receive a stipend for their work.  For more information, see the ACA web site at
http://www.acaweb.org/content.aspx?sid=2&pid=44 or contact Martin Ramsay at martinr@acaweb.org.  Registration is limited to the first 25 teams who register.

4)  Teaching and Learning Institute 2007
The Appalachian College Association’s 2007 Teaching & Learning Institute will be held June 11-16 at Brevard College. This highly interactive and hands-on week provides experts in critical thinking, classroom assessment techniques, development of significant learning experiences, and the connections between the curriculum and the co-curriculum. Additionally, time exists for networking with campus colleagues and with inter-institutional colleagues in your discipline. The deans of the ACA support this endeavor as one of the best professional development opportunities for ACA faculty. Space is limited to the first 100 participants recommended by their deans. For answers to your questions about the week or about registering, please contact Alan Belcher (
abelcher@ucwv.edu) or Karen Merriman (kmerriman@ucwv.edu).

5)  Classics Across the Curriculum Course Development Workshops

In June 2007, the Appalachian College Association in collaboration with the Center for Hellenic Studies and with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will offer three workshops to develop course materials for the study of the ancient Greek world.  Work will focus on creating teaching materials on “Exercising the Mind,” which includes an exploration of philosophy as a way of conceptualizing human existence and the way Athenian youths prepared to assume their roles in society, and “Structures of Political Organization,” which will examine how Athenians organized and participated in their civic institutions.

In addition to the overall goal of creating materials for the study of ancient Greece, the project also aims to forge collaborative, inter-disciplinary, and inter-institutional ties among scholars of the ACA based on mutual interests and curricular objectives and develop models of teaching, scholarly interaction, and publication that reflect and respond to evolving technologies and student expectations. The work undertaken during the seminars next summer will build on the efforts of those who contributed to the three earlier seminars on “The Daily Life of Athenians,” “Athenian Art and Architecture,” and “The Religious Festivals of the Greeks.”

All Classics Across the Curriculum Course Development workshops will take place at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC.  Funding for this project will cover the costs of transportation to and from Washington, D.C., accommodations during the workshop, and breakfast and lunch. Participants will be on their own for dinner in the evenings.

Participants in the “Exercising the Mind” workshop will arrive Tuesday, June 12 and depart Sunday, June 17.

Participants in the “Structures of Political Organization” will arrive on Saturday, June 16 and will depart on Thursday, June 21.

A third workshop will be open to all faculty members who have worked on modules over the three years of the project. For three days, beginning on Thursday, June 21, participants will have access to the library as well as the consultants and staff of the Hellenic Center, so they can continue developing their materials. Participants will depart on Sunday, June 24.

Contact Kenny Morrell (morrell@rhodes.edu or 901-843-3821) for more information or for an application.  Faculty members may apply to participate in one, two, or all three workshops. Applications are due April 4, 2007.

6)  Appalachian IDEAS Network
The Appalachian IDEAS Network is recruiting faculty from across the region to develop teams of students to participate in a 2007 competition, April 13-14, 2007 in Lexington, KY. The Appalachian IDEAS Network is a regional, multi-university program focused on social entrepreneurship education and community development. Teams of students from across the region develop an innovative, entrepreneurial solution to an Appalachian community issue, present a 10-minute business pitch before a group of judges, and compete at the Social Venture Showcase for grants to help implement their concept.

The IDEAS Network is about more than the social entrepreneur showcase.  It’s an excellent opportunity for students, educators, and community leaders working to address issues in Appalachia to network and share information through experiential learning.

Contact Audra Cryder (859-257-8265 or
acryd2@uky.edu) if you need more information or are interested in developing teams of students.  Detailed guidelines and teaching materials will be available in November if you want to incorporate them into your spring curriculum.

7) GLOBE trip to Eastern and Western Europe
Global Leadership for Organizations, Business and Education (GLOBE) announces a comprehensive and innovative program of international business studies and corporate visits in Europe for summer of 2007.  This academically based program features six and a half weeks of study, travel, corporate visits and service in the context of the historical, cultural, and political landscape of both Eastern and Western Europe.  Program participants will travel to Rome, Florence, Paris, Brussels, London, Siena, and Pisa.

Student and faculty participants will be recruited primarily from the Appalachian College Association in an effort to expose students from the region to the dynamics of European economic, political, social, and cultural life as well as the importance of European Union and the impact of  international business as it impacts today’s global society. (Note that this is not an ACA funded program.)

For more information on this opportunity, contact Ray Smith of Bryan College (423 634 2057 or
ray.smith@bryan.edu).

8) Open Source Initiative Workshop
