AN EVENING OF CHEMICAL MAGIC
The Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society hosted their third annual "chemistry magic show" on April 24.  Many families came to watch and were delighted!  This year we focused on more volunteer-oriented demonstrations, much to everyone's delight.  All photos courtesy of Angelica Tassoulas and used with permission.

Professional Advisor Jennifer Bachman does the famous "golddigger" reaction.

The whole group sang Happy Birthday to one of the spectators and then proceeded to eat the candles!

Forrest Edens does the "amorphous monster" demonstration with polyurethane foam.

Senior Molly Dougall wows the crowd with the "Flaming Vapor Ramp."

Senior Eva Frazier and Junior Helen Dauer pull a thin strand of nylon from the interface of two solutions in a beaker.

Elementary school children help pull the nylon.

Eva does the oldie-but-goodie "Red, White and Blue."

Junior Molly Carpenter ignites balloons full of mixtures of hydrogen
and oxygen gases.

Eva sticks up her nose at the Dissolving Styrofoam!

Sophomore Whitney Johnson freezes a carnation in liquid nitrogen.

Helen pours liquid nitrogen down the steps of the auditorium, much to the children's
delight.

Whitney hammers a nail into a board with a banana - and breaks the
banana in half!

Whitney burns up a Chee-To with molten potassium chlorate.
The evening concluded with a spectacular Thermite reaction, which was not photographed.
