The Sewanee community is deeply saddened by the tragic events at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed, and our prayers and thoughts to all who are affected by this horrific turn of events.
In the aftermath of the tragedies on the Virginia Tech campus, the Sewanee chaplains will offer prayers at services throughout the week for everyone affected by these devastating acts of violence.
To our own community: we would like to remind you of some important issues related to your own well-being and safety.
First, as some of you may have friends or family members at Virginia Tech, you may want use support services available at Sewanee:
- The University Counseling Service is free and confidential. To make an appointment, with a psychologist please call ext. 1325.
- The Deans of Students are available for general advice and academic support. To make an appointment to meet with a Dean, please call one of the numbers listed below:

- The University Chaplains can be a source of support and guidance. To speak with a Chaplain, please call ext. 1274.
- The Residential Life staff can be helpful as well. Please contact your Head Resident, Proctor, or Assistant Proctor.
Second, for your own safety and the safety of others, please follow the practices below:
- Do not prop open exterior doors to residence halls.
- Lock your room door when you go to bed at night and when you are leaving for an extended period of time.
- Report suspicious persons or activity to the Sewanee Police at ext. 1111.
- Please check your voicemails and emails frequently in case the Residential Life staff or Police need to leave you important information or instructions.
Sewanee’s campus is equipped with the following features that may also aid students and others in emergency situations:
- Blue emergency phones are located throughout the domain. These phones are directly connected to the police station. Please utilize these call centers if you face any kind of threat or danger.
- Call boxes are located on the exterior of the majority of Sewanee’s residential spaces. Please utilize these call centers if you are in danger.
