Classroom Use
The following information is needed in order for clearance to be requested:
- Course name
- Course number
- Number of copies
- Book/Journal/Magazine Title
- Author, Editor, and/or Translator of the Book, Journal, or Magazine*
- Volume/Edition of Journal
- Copyright Year
- Copyright Holder and/or Publisher, if different
- Pages to be copied (beginning page # to ending page #)
- ISBN/ISSN (if applicable)
*Editors of magazines can be found on the page giving staff information, usually around the table of contents page. All publications whether they are journals or magazines have an editor. I cannot process a request without the name of the author, editor, and/or translator. Let me know if you are having trouble finding this information.
The following items are not necessary but they do help speed things up a little:
- Chapter or Article Title
- Author of the Chapter or Article
It is extremely important to know if the material you wish to use is being used in a particular publication with permission from another. Example: You want to use an article appearing in "Newsweek," but that particular article originally appeared in "The Wall Street Journal" and is being reproduced in "Newsweek" with permission of "The Wall Street Journal." Although the one you want to use is in "Newsweek" I must go back to the person/publisher who owns the copyright of the article, which in this case is "The Wall Street Journal." Not having this information at the time of requesting clearance will result in a delay as well.
Material such as this usually appears in anthologies, journals, and magazines. The credit line is either in the front matter of the book (sometimes on the copyright or acknowledgments page) or at the bottom of the first page of the article.
Please keep in mind that clearances can take as little as two days to as long as six months, depending on the publisher.
Library Reserves
Any photocopied reserve material which does not meet the fair use guidelines must receive clearance from the copyright owner. Processing time on reserve material is the same for regular classroom clearance.
Materials cannot be placed on reserve until clearance has been obtained. Forms for photocopied reserve materials can be obtained in Print Services or on the Public Information fileserver (Copyright folder). These forms, along with a copy of the article, need to be submitted to Print Services for approval and/or clearance, and then we will get those to duPont for you. Once the material has been approved for reserve, the Circulation staff needs seven work days at the beginning of the semester and three days thereafter to get the materials on reserve.
Electronic Reserves
All requests for electronic reserve material must receive clearance from the copyright holder. Processing time on electronic reserve material is the same for regular classroom clearance.
When submitting requests for reserves, please indicate on the form when the material is to be assigned so someone from Circulation can get back to you if there is going to be a delay.
