PUBLICATIONS
The Cap and Gown is the annual publication of the student body. It contains an account of the year’s activities and student life. All contributions from student of time and energy are welcome. The general management and fiscal affairs of The Cap and Gown and The Sewanee Purple are overseen by the University Publications Board, which is composed of students elected by the Student Assembly and of members of the Faculty and Administration appointed by the Provost. This Board also reviews and certifies nominations for Editor of these two publications, which nominations are made by members of the Order of Gownsmen. The cost of The Cap and Gown and The Sewanee Purple is included in the Student Activity Fee, and all students receive both publications without additional charge.
The Interlocutor : The Sewanee Undergraduate Philosophical Review, a peer-reviewed undergraduate philosophy journal of the Philosophy Department, publishes distinguished undergraduate philosophical essays from around the world. As a part of their Senior Seminar, the seniors in the Philosophy Department function as the editorial board for The Interlocutor.
The staff of The Mountain Goat is dedicated to providing a creative and artistic outlet in the form of a literary magazine, published once a semester. The magazine maintains a high artistic standard and gives young writers among the student body an excellent outlet for developing their work.
The Purple Cow publishes original humorous prose, poetry, and artwork by Sewanee students, faculty, alumni and community members. Purple Cow intends to focus on humor, parody and satire, besides regular prose, as means to comment on our environment and will allow Sewanee denizens to publish work that would otherwise have no outlet.
The Sewanee Legacy, founded in 1993, is an independent student journal that offers a critical review of issues and culture on the Domain. It is published monthly and seeks to promote the traditions and community of Sewanee. The Legacy welcomes any students interested in preserving Sewanee’s unique heritage.
The Sewanee Mountain Messenger is a weekly publication that devotes itself to Sewanee news and announcements of coming events. Although intended for the permanent members of the community, it is enjoyed by many students who pick up free copies at the Supply Store or the Student Post Office. Subscriptions are also available.
The Sewanee Magazine, a quarterly publication, is sent to all alumni and friends of the University. Copies are available for students at the Student Post Office.
The Sewanee Purple is a bimonthly newspaper run by University students. Students of both the College and the Seminary, faculty members, and others is the community are encouraged to contribute to this publication. The Purple strives to cover any and all events that are of concern to those at the University. The Purple also provides a forum for student opinion and debate and serves as an outlet for photographers, writers, artists, and all those interested in any aspect of newspaper production.
The Sewanee Review, the oldest literary quarterly in America, was founded in 1892. It is published in January, April, July, and October, offering in each issue a variety of content—critical essays, poetry, fiction, reviews, the work of a distinguished list of contributors. The Sewanee Review enjoys an international circulation and lists among its subscribers eighteen hundred libraries in this country and six hundred libraries abroad.
