SPECIAL INTEREST ORGANIZATIONS

Acolytes and Lay Readers aid in both the daily and Sunday chapel services. All interested students are welcome to participate.

The African American Alliance, established in l977, is an organization whose members are dedicated to fostering an environment within the College in which minority students can develop their academic and personal potential in addition to contributing to the cultural richness of the University community. Membership is open to all who support the objectives of the organization.

Amnesty International is a non-political, non-partisan organization which seeks to assist prisoners of conscience throughout the world. The Sewanee chapter of the urgent Action network receives reports from AI on the detention of prisoners who are at risk of fortune or death without due process. Letters are sent to heads of state in an attempt to maintain world-wide focus on concern for human rights.

The Arcadians are students who volunteer to assist the Admissions Office in attracting prospective students to Sewanee by giving campus tours, serving as overnight hosts/hostesses, and driving prospective students to and from the airport. This vital program allows students, the most vocal spokespersons, to promote the essence of Sewanee in its academic, athletic and social activities.

Art Forum—To inform, educate, and stimulate the role of art in our community by bringing different speakers to campus and provide trips to nearby exhibits.

Baptist Christian Ministries is an organization open to students from any denomination with the purpose of furthering Christian growth and fellowship.

 The Cinema Guild endeavors to bring first-rate foreign and classical American films free of charge to the Mountain and University community.

College Democrats of America’s Sewanee Chapter (CDA) provides to the undergraduate student body an avenue to participate in and contribute to the political discourse in Sewanee as well as the larger community. The College Democrats are dedicated to furthering the ideals of the Democratic party. Members of CDA are interested in any person’s opinion and believe that all have a right to be heard. College Republicans is a student organization that supports and promotes the political ideology and activities of the Republican Party. It is open to all students.

Dionysus and Company is intended to provide theater experiences for the University community, especially to offer opportunities to non-theater students and others in the community, providing alternative possibilities and places for theatrical events to occur.

Ducks Unlimited—The purpose of the Sewanee Chapter of Ducks Unlimited is to inform students about the need to conserve North American wetlands and the many important ways each person can help in conservation, restoration, and protection.

EAT (Epsilon Alpha Tau) is an organization founded for students to share culinary knowledge, experiments and experience with one another.

Environmental Resident Program is comprised of representatives from each residence hall and seeks to increase environmental awareness through education and running a recycling program.

The Flying Tigers flying club promotes safety, education, fellowship, and the enjoyment of flying while serving the community of The University of the South.

FOCUS, the Fine Arts Photography Club is an organization that promotes awareness and understanding of photography as a fine art medium. FOCUS members have access to a dark room and printing space, and they provide workshops, lectures, print critiques, exhibitions and other beneficial programs that promote the awareness of photography.

GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) founded in 1988 to provide a setting for confidential and frank discussion concerning human sexuality. Its goal is to dispel stereotypes about sexual orientation by building community and providing education.

B-Glad Sewanee welcomes students of all sexual orientations (including gay, straight, lesbian, and bisexual). The International Model Organization strives to increase the awareness of the student body concerning current global issues. The organization also prepares its active members to represent the University at regional and national IMO conventions.

J.U.S.T. (Justice Union of Sewanee, Tennessee)—The purpose of the J.U.S.T. is to raise awareness of economic injustice in Franklin County and to continue to research and understand the multifaceted living wage debate taking place across the country.

Knowledge-For-Life—The purpose of Knowledge-For-Life is to get a group of insightful, open-minded, self-motivated students together outside of class to learn through reading and discussion.

Kung Fu Movie Club—The Kung Fu Movie Guild is an organization that is devoted to exhibiting films from the Martial Arts genre to the Sewanee community and holding subsequent film-related discussions every other week during the school year.

The Muslim Student Association is an organization of Muslim students at the University of the South. The purpose of this organization is to increase awareness about Islam in the community, hold seminars and lectures about Islam, and have session prayer’s, including Juamu (Friday prayer). The MSA welcomes any students who are sincerely interested in learning about Islam and any students who believe in the faith of Islam.

The Organization for Cross-Cultural Understanding encourages all students to recognize, appreciate, and understand ethnic diversities on campus. It encourages students to share their cultural heritage and presents the interaction of diverse cultures as a positive component of the liberal arts experience. The group presents diverse cultural activities, both educational and social.

Perpetual Motion is a performing dance company designed to give students an opportunity to perform and to expose the Sewanee community to the many forms and styles of dance. Membership is open to any interested student or area dancer, based on auditions held each fall. Auditions for the company are also casting auditions for the spring performance.

The Pink and White Ribbon Societies are elective social organizations composed of upperclasswomen and other residents of the community.

Presbyterian Campus Ministries—The purpose of Presbyterian Campus Ministries is to provide a group for Christian fellowship, worship, and Bible study.

The Pro-Choice organization provides learning opportunities regarding the options available in the event of an unwanted pregnancy. The group offers transportation and support to women who decide that abortion is their best alternative, and to keep state and national governments aware of student’s position on legislative measures. The Program Board provides, stimulates, and promotes a well-balanced variety of social, recreational, entertainment, and educational programs for the students of the University.

The Red, The Green, and The Black Ribbon Societies are elective social organizations composed of upperclassmen of both the College and School of Theology and other members in residence.

The Sacristans’ Guild is a small group of twelve students who assist the chaplains and other Chapel staff in preparing for all services of worship (as well as other University events) held in All Saints’ Chapel. One must apply for this position; applications are accepted in the early Spring. Those selected as Candidates are then trained by two of the senior sacristans along with the Associate University Chaplain over a period of six to eight weeks.

Scuba Club’s purpose is to provide Sewanee students with the opportunity to develop a serious interest in Scuba through education, classes, certification, and trips.

Senior Social Committee comprised of members of the senior class plans meaningful programs for the senior class to further strengthen relationships, build class identity, and commemorate the Sewanee experience.

Sewanee Cadence/Grace/Guild—The purpose of this organization shall be to strengthen and develop individual voices through ensemble repertoire chosen for its complexity, lyrical character, audience appeal and beauty. The ensemble will sing mostly a cappella literature in performance ranging from the Medieval to Modern periods.

The Sewanee Catholic Community is an organization representing Roman Catholics on the Mountain, be they students, faculty, or members of the surrounding area. The organization provides for the discussion of faith and related issues, provides community service, and offers Roman Catholic Mass and other services for the purposes of worship. Membership is open to all persons regardless of creed.

The Sewanee Choral is a community choral singing group whose purpose is to learn and perform choral repertoire. Anyone from Sewanee and the surrounding communities is welcome to join. The choral often does a large choral work with the University Orchestra.

The Sewanee Conference on Women, planned by a group of students, faculty, and staff, brings noted speakers to campus each spring to inform the community on issues of particular concern to women.

Sewanee Jazz Society purpose is to foster an appreciation of jazz through weekly meetings and jazz performances. Sewanee Sound is a student run acappella group that performs throughout the year.

The Sewanee Medieval Society is a non-profit, international organization dedicated to the promotion of the research and re-enactment of life in the Middle Ages.

The Sewanee Outing Program, through instruction and the coordination of local excursions, promotes outdoor recreation, sports, and activities such as skiing, canoeing, hiking, caving, backpacking, climbing, and biking. The SOP operates a low-cost Bike Shop and lends outing equipment to students. It sponsors the Carter Martin Whitewater Club, which have been notably successful in intercollegiate competitions.

The Sewanee Peace Coalition is a student led activist organization with an emphasis on international affairs. The Coalition unites students who are interested in thinking critically about issues of international peace and security.

The Sewanee Popular Music Association was organized in 1971 to provide popular music of all types on the Mountain. As a service organization, not a social club, membership is open to all students.

THE SEWANEE SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM advances its member’s speaking and argumentative skills and represents the University of the South in regional and national forensic competitions.

THE SEWANEE TABLE TENNIS CLUB is a recreational organization that promotes the timeless and fascinating game table tennis, a.k.a. ping pong. The club provides an arena for amiable social interactions through regular tournament and games, as well as recruiting members for a tentative table tennis team.

SPECE is an organization that is committed to helping students find their place in the Sewanee Community. This will be accomplished by building community, creating a support group, and offering substance free programs and activities.

THE ST. LUKE’S COMMUNITY promotes the well being the School of Theology students, their immediate families, and their community.

STUDENTS FOR AN ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE PRESIDENT (SERP) is a national, non-partisan organization dedicated to making environmental responsibility a guiding principle of our government and society.

STUDENTS FOR LIFE promotes greater respect for human life among the people of the University community through education and through service to the needs of post-abortion women, pregnant mothers in crisis and their unborn children.

SWING CLUB fosters an appreciation and opportunity to learn different types of popular dance. The club sponsors swing dances, lessons, and trips to area dances.

THEATRE SEWANEE is the theatrical production company of The University of the South. Membership is open to all students, regardless of major, and members of the community. Open auditions are held for each of the four to six major productions annually as well as the numerous student-directed studio and cabaret performances.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE—this group of men and women meet several times a week to play. The University of the South Shooting Club provides instruction and participation and a safe and fun environment for all members of the community to enjoy a variety of shooting sports and to compete in tournaments.

THE WOMEN’S CENTER BOARD strives to promote women at the University by sponsoring workshops, lectures, and other events. The Pinnacle Weekly Series for Women meets every Thursday during lunch to listen to a guest speaker share her life experiences. The Women’s Center Board also sponsors Wine and Cheese parties for all academic majors and their professors.

WUTS is the student-run radio station that provides music and educational programming, as well as news broadcasts and features, 18 hours a day during the school year. WUTS broadcasts at 200 watts of power, covering not only Sewanee but approximately a 20-mile area.

YOUNG LIFE is a nationwide ministry dedicated to meeting high school students “on their own turf” and building strong relationships through which the gospel may be communicated. University students serve as leaders for local Young Life groups.
