Academic Programs and Majors
Because Sewanee does not offer a pre-medical major, students are free to major in the discipline (for example, Biology, English, or Economics) of their choice. However, you should be careful to complete courses that are required by the particular school that you want to attend.
A look at the courses required by medical schools will serve as an example of the courses you might be expected to complete at Sewanee. All medical schools require
one semester of calculus,
four semesters of chemistry (including organic chemistry),
two semesters of biology,
two semesters of physics and
two semesters of English.

A few medical schools now require a
semester of biochemistry or
four semesters of biology.
A variety of required courses may be necessary for other health professional schools, so become familiar with the schools you want to attend to ensure accurate advising. For this reason, it is important that you narrow your choice of schools to a reasonable number.
