The sale of liquor and wine in Franklin County is prohibited by law. Beer may be sold only by permit from the Franklin County Beer Board. Thus, at no University event may alcohol be sold.
The University may provide alcoholic beverages free of charge at private events on campus so long as the University purchased the alcohol and the beverages are served by its employees. Catering firms and their employees may never serve alcohol and may not provide alcohol as part of the catered menu. Caterers from other counties may be accustomed to serving alcohol in those other counties where the laws are different, but even if they are licensed to sell and serve in other counties, those licenses are not valid in Franklin County.
Event hosts must follow the law and University policies, including those which prohibit the service of alcohol to anyone less than 21 years of age. The University strongly encourages that alcohol not be served at events where college students are likely to attend. University policy requires trained and ABC certified bartenders and ID-checkers be present at any event where alcohol will be served and those under the age of 21 are invited or are likely to show.
Chris Carlson coordinates the provision of alcohol and bartenders/servers for all University events. She may be reached at ccarlson@sewanee.edu or ext. 1686. A university budget account number is required to schedule beverage service. Please contact Ms. Carlson well in advance of an event.
