Courts Hall

History
Courts Hall, built in 1967, is a two story rectangular coed dormitory located on the corner of Georgia Avenue and Hall Street, with rooms opening into fresh air hallways. Courts fronts on a small lake which attracts water birds and has a resident muskrat.  Courts was refurbished in the summer of 2005 with new bathroom fixtures, carpeting, and paint.

Layout and Design
The dorm contains a central courtyard green with trees and bushes, connecting walkways, and a picnic table.  Smoking is not allowed within the courtyard area.  Courts houses women and men in suites of four students, two in each room with bathroom between. Walls and ceilings are painted white; carpeting is a neutral-looking green and beige mixture.

Each room contains a study room and a bedroom. The study room, 8 1/2 feet by 9 feet, contains a built-in desk top (2'6" x 3'6") with three built-in bookshelves over it for each student. There is indirect fluorescent lighting over the desk space. A window (3'9" x 2'10") with alabaster venetian blinds opens onto the courtyard from the study room. This room is wired for telephone and to the all-campus computer network and has an overhead light.

The bedroom, 12 feet by 15 feet, has a window (4' x 5') opening to the outside of the building. Each student has 3'10" of clothes hanging space in an open cupboard and the use of two of the four drawers of a built-in chest. Over the chest is a lighted mirror and electrical outlet. There is an overhead light in the bedroom, two single beds, and most rooms have three wall shelves for each student. The bathroom opens off the study room and has a tile floor, two basins with lighted mirrors, a shower, and toilet. Courts has three laundry rooms, each with a washer and dryer, and one with ironing board. There are two areas with vending machines.

The carpeted Commons room overlooks the lake and the courtyard, has a large stone fireplace, comfortable couches and chairs, a television and VCR/DVD player, and two large tables with captain's chairs. There is a full kitchen including microwave with small dining area adjacent to the common room.

There are parking lots immediately adjoining the dorm on two sides, a covered bike shed, and new walkway linking the dorm to the sidewalks leading to central campus. Courts is located near Stirling's Coffee House and has lawn areas on the lakeside and behind the dorm.

Additional Information
Beds in Courts are 75" long and have approximately 12" of storage space under each bed.   Students are asked not to bring metal frame futon furniture as it often causes significant damage in students' rooms.

Courts Hall is not air-conditioned.  A fan is highly recommended for your room!  The Courts common room is air conditioned.
