History
Gorgas, formerly the largest women's residence hall on campus, became co-ed in the summer of 2005. Men live on the first floor and females live on the second and third floor. In the summer of 1998, Gorgas Hall underwent a thorough refurbishment, complete with new carpeting, lighting, paint, and fixtures.
Layout and Design
Home to men and women of all classes, Gorgas is known for its spacious rooms and active atmosphere. Gorgas contains three floors, with a mix of single and doubles on each floor. It is located on Tennessee Avenue, next to the soccer field, the School of Theology, and the new Tennessee Williams Performing Arts Center. Gorgas is located about halfway between central campus and the Cross.
The average room is 185 square feet, with white walls and plum-varigated carpeting. The windows measure 73 inches wide by 63 inches tall. Each double room contains two desks, two desk chairs, two wall-mounted bookshelves, two dressers, and a full-length mirror. The singles contain one desk and chair for the occupant. Community bathrooms are located on each floor and have private showers, a bath tub, plenty of counter space and outlets.
Gorgas has two kitchens, both located on the first floor. One is a full, eat-in kitchen, and the other is a half-kitchen located next to the common rooom. The common room is very large with comfortable couches, chairs, tables, lamps, television, VCR/DVD player, and several attractive prints covering the walls.
Additional Information
The beds in Gorgas are 75" long and there is approximately 20" of storage space under each bed. Students are asked not to bring metal frame futon furniture as it often causes significant damage to students' rooms.
Gorgas Hall is not air-conditioned. A fan is highly recommended for your room! The common room in Gorgas is air conditioned.
