Tuckaway Hall

History
Built in 1929, Tuckaway represents Sewanee's first use of fieldstone architecture in its buildings. From 1929 until the fall of 2008, the dormitory housed 60 men from all four classes.  Beginning in the fall of 2008, Tuckaway will welcome its first female residents. Completely renovated to include air conditioning in the summer of 1999, this centrally located dormitory will serve as home of one of Sewanee's six new learning communities.  Tuckaway also offers its famous porch with welcoming rocking chairs and signature round pillars. Tuckaway is a studious and active community, and has its share of friendly ghosts.

Layout and Design
The double and single rooms are situated in three main sections divided by multi-level staircases to create five small floors. Some rooms on the lower wing have arched windows. The rooms range in size from 105 to 306 square feet and share hall or suite baths. A bed, desk and chair, five-drawer chest, three-shelf wall bookcase, telephone and internet access are provided for each resident. The floors are carpeted in brown with off-white walls.

The Upper Commons Room off the porch has a large stone fireplace, handsome paneling and is known as "the fishbowl" because of its three sets of glassed French doors. The Lower Commons Room - opening onto a complete kitchen - is used by residents for sharing meals with friends, for watching TV, VHS and DVD and for holding meetings.

Additional Information
The beds in Tuckaway are 75" long and have approximately 18" of storage space underneath each of them.  Students may not bring metal frame futon furniture as it often causes significant damage to students' rooms.
