Substance Free Housing
What is substance free housing?
Smoke-Free Housing
For environmental, health, and safety reasons, all residential halls have been designated smoke-free. Candles, incense, cigarettes and the use of smokeless tobacco are prohibited within the rooms and in all common areas of the residence halls. According to Tennesse Law, smoking is prohibited within 50 feet of a building.
Substance-Free Housing
The College has set aside a number of living areas dedicated for substance-free housing. In the fall of 2009 a new substance free policy will be in place. Students living in substance-free agree not to possess or use alcohol, tobacco, smokeless tobacco or other illegal substances while on campus. It is no longer restricted to your room/suite. Presently, no students are permitted to use alcohol or tobacco in any of the common areas of our residential facilities. In substance-free housing, this policy effectively extends to students rooms, regardless of the resident's age. Presently, the second floor in Quintard Dormitory, one wing in McCrady and the first floor of St. Luke's have been set aside for substance-free living.
Rule Enforcement
Living in substance-free housing is completely voluntary. If you are not willing to live up to this agreement of being substancee free, and wish merely to secure a better dorm, you should not sign up. The enforcement of the substance-free housing guidelines will be primarily resident enforced-- by the Proctors, Assistant Proctors, and other residents. Students who violate the agreement for substance-free housing will be subject to disciplinary action including fines, sanctions and they will likely have their substance-free housing privilege revoked. In the event that a student's substance-free housing privileges are revoked, he or she will be required to move to the first appropriate space, as determined by the Director of Residential Life and the Assistant Dean of Students.
Application Procedure
Students from all classes are encouraged to apply for substance-free housing. As we do with the general room selection process, seniors will draw first to insure they receive a room if they desire one. After seniors draw, all other substance-free applicants will select their room based on their lottery number. The only requirement for selection at that time will be that all persons who live in substance-free housing, including roommates and suitemates, agree to the terms of substance-free living. That means you may select a double room and have your friend live with you, but he or she must agree to the same guidelines. If you are interested in living in a substance-free environment, please be aware that application or substance-free housing will be available March 26th and are due Monday, April 6. Substance-Free room draw will take place on Thursday, April 16th at 5:00pm in the BC Gallery Room. General Room draw for other dormitories will take place April 20-22 in Convocation Hall. First-year students may designate their interest in substance-free on their Housing Preference Form.
