Academics at Sewanee for New StudentsYou are about to begin one of the greatest adventures of your life — your college education. We at Sewanee are glad you have made the choice to come here and are looking forward to welcoming you in August. Understanding that this will be a time of transition, I hope your adjustment to life here will be smooth, that you will make good friends, and that there will be enjoyable moments in your early days. I hope even more that you are preparing to be challenged by an exceptional academic experience — to shape your mind in a way that will have a long-term impact on how you live. I know you are capable of meeting the challenge because the Admissions Office has testified to that, but it is not too soon to think intentionally, about such topics as how you might plan your overall academic program, what kind of advising you need or are prepared to receive, what courses you should take your first term, and what you can do to ensure the best academic experience possible.
Please look at each of the four sub-components on the website and complete all tasks mentioned by June 10th.
•
Honor Code. In this community the Honor Code is not merely a good theoretical idea and a respected tradition but a serious reflection of how daily life is lived by Sewanee students. You should read this carefully since you will be asked to sign a form when you matriculate, signifying your own commitment to the Honor Code.
•
Academic Information. Read the “Starting Point for Academic Planning” carefully and follow the instructions and links provided there.
•
Quick Questions to Help Your Adviser. Complete and submit answers to these questions so that we will know more about you.
•
An Opportunity for Your Parents. Let one or both of your parents know of the option to tell us something about you that may be helpful.
The professors and administrators at Sewanee want you to do well and will be here to help you. The quality and success of your educational experience will depend upon the extent to which you engage in the process, make careful and informed decisions, and monitor your own progress in light of the goals which you set for yourself. If you have questions, please send me an e-mail at
ljones@sewanee.edu or call me or Donna Parker at 931-598-1187. Good luck in planning for the year ahead, and welcome to the Sewanee family!
Sincerely yours,
Larry H. Jones
