Choosing A Living and Learning Community
Sewanee’s way of bringing new students into its community of living and learning together is through theme-based residence groups called Living and Learning Communities. This program provides an opportunity for all first year students to enhance their academic experience by living in residence halls with other students who share their interests and by providing an inroad to campus organizations that engages those interests. Participation in these communities will connect students and faculty advisors in areas of intellectual interest, facilitating the building of the relationships for which Sewanee is known. In Living and Learning Communities will engage in activities outside of the classroom throughout their first year centered on their common interest and will provide new students with an opportunity to explore their interests as they intersect with academic life.
Learning communities will be housed in several of the residence halls on campus. These are the four Living and Learning Communities for the class of 2014:
Languages and Literature: This community is intended for those students who are most interested in studying English literature and/or foreign or ancient languages and literature.
History and the Arts: This community will be interesting to students who are interested in studying art, classics, film studies, history, history of art and architecture, humanities, music, philosophy, religious studies, American studies, medieval studies, Asian studies and/or theatre.
Social Sciences: This community is intended for students who would like to study anthropology, archaeology, economics, linguistics, political science, international and global studies, business, history and/or mathematics.
