What does this mean?

The Oxford English Dictionary Online identifies ecological sustainability as “of, relating to, or designating forms of human economic activity and culture that do not lead to environmental degradation, especially avoiding the long-term depletion of natural resources.”  This website was created with this definition of sustainability in mind although many more specific definitions exist.

This website is a resource for students interested in the environmental issues framing our world today.  It aims to put these issues in the context of Sewanee so that the global environmental crisis can be brought home and examined within our area.  Here you will find background information on energy, water, food, and paper resources as well as information on our consumption in Sewanee.  Additionally, this website offers simple methods of decreasing your consumption at both the campus and world levels.

In the 2006 academic school year, Sewanee sent 1,638.65 tons of solid waste to the landfill.  Please challenge yourself and your friends to curb your consumption patterns and think before you trash.

This website is taken from a booklet was created by Katie Royer and Darcy Cooper in Advent 2007 as a semester project in sustainability for Religion 307:  Religious environmentalism.
