News updated September 2, 2008

Welcome to the News for the Sewanee Summer Music Festival.  We have started to prepare for the 2009 SSMF, and will be reporting progress and other information here, so please feel free to check back often.

First, SSMF Faculty Horn instructor David Brockett is appearing during the late summer and early fall with the Cleveland Orchestra as they tour in Europe and when they return to the United States.  Mr. Brockett, who has perfromed with the Cleveland Orcehstra many times, returns to play what must be a horn players dream, Bruckner symphonies.  Well done Mr. Brockett, and we hope you enjoy your concertizing.

Maestro James Paul has kept busy since departing Sewanee.  He is preparing for a group of concerts in Xalapa, Mexico, where he will conduct the orchestra where SSMF Faculty Violist Jonathane Kane plays viola.

We also want to share the great news of the creation of a scholarship for SSMF students beginning with the recent 2008 season.  The University of the South is pleased to offer any SSMF student beginning with the 2008 student body a scholarhip to attend the University of the South in the amount of $10,000, renewable each year, when their application to the University is accepted.  This wonderful opportunity is available to students interested in music, or any other major.  For more information please contact SSMF Managing Director Mark Savage at 931.598.1225 or ssmf@sewanee.edu for more information.

Please keep your eyes on the SSMF web page as we will be adding the 2009 concert programs as well as some new features designed to get all more information about the Festival.

As we prepare for another season, we'd like to once again mention the winners of the first Jaqueline Avent Music Scholarships.  These three showed great poise and talent during the concert with the Festival Orchestra in the 2008 Concerto Competition Concert.  2nd runner-up, Lauren Watkins, 1st runner-up, Lucas Pruitt, and 1st place winner Benjamin Stoehr.  Congratulations and well done!!

Before you leave, take a minute and follow this link Mendelssohn Octet.  It will take you to a performance from the summer of 2006 by some SSMF young artists.  Over 22,000 people have viewd this video.  You may also want to do a search for SSMF, and you'll find excerpts from the First Annual BassoonZoom, the Stars and Stripes, trombones playing the Pines and Rome, SSMF Faculty members Ms. Sung and Mr. York playing Handel-Halvorsen, and even the Managing Director playing the typewriter.  Just search for SSMF if you dare.

Thanks for visiting.  Come back soon!!
