Student Services
Because the Sewanee Summer Music Festival is located on the campus of the University of the South, we have access to many of the amenities of the University.
Our students benefit from the many facilities and services provided by the University, and enjoy the beauty of the 10,000 acre Domain, as well.
College Credit
A maximum of five credit hours may be earned through the University of the South in orchestra, chamber music, and applied music. Only high school graduates and college students are eligible for credit. Applications/Registration for college credit must be completed before July 1, 2008. Please contact Festival staff for more information after your arrival at the Festival.
Facilities
All classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and teaching studios are centrally located in various buildings of the University of the South campus. Most concerts are held in the 1,000 seat Guerry Auditorium. Outdoor concerts are held in a charming courtyard known as Guerry Garth. The annual Festival Brass Concert is presented in All Saints' Chapel, an imposing neo-Gothic space with cathedral accoustics. St. Luke's Chapel, which has been converted into a recital hall, is an ideal venue for master classes and intimate performances.
Health Services
Limited health services are available to SSMF students. Consultation visits to the University Health Services Office during limited hours are included in the tuition. Emergency treatment, surgery, medicine, X-rays, shots, etc. are not included in this fee. These additional services will be billed directly to the parents. Please consult your insurance policy for more details. In case of emergency, the Columbia/Emerald-Hodgson Hospital is located on campus. It is essential that the required health form be completed and returned by each applicant prior to opening day.
Housing and Meals
All students and most of the faculty live on campus. SSMF students enjoy access to the fine facilities of the University of South. Students are housed in university dormitories, arranged by age and gender, and are supervised by qualified Festival personnel and adults consisting of Dorm Proctors and Dorm Parents. The Proctors and Dorm Parents are managed by a Dean of Students who is also responsible for the student's non-musical activities. The dormitories are centrally located near the performance facilities and dining hall. Meals are served three times daily in the newly constructed McClurg Dining Hall.
Recreation
Several special recreational outings are arranged each summer and include hiking, swimming, and caving. Students also enjoy spontaneous volleyball and soccer games or take to their bike and explore the scenic byways of Sewanee. The Fowler Sports and Fitness Center is an impressive facility that houses basketball and volleyball courts, an indoor pool, an indoor track, three indoor tennis courts, a weight room, handball and squash courts, and a dance studio. Outdoor facilities include an all-weather track, ten tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, an equestrian center, and several fields for recreational sports.
The Sewanee Summer Music Festival also provides transportation for adult supervised trips off the campus. These trips include the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, TN, the Huntsville Space Center in Huntsville, AL, and other sites of natural beauty and intereset in and around the University campus. The Festival also organizes walks to the 4th of July fireworks presentation in Sewanee, as well as late night hikes and star watching. One trip to a local shopping mall is made available early in the Festival so that the young artsits can gather forgotten supplies left at home.
