Statement of Non-hazing

By-Laws of the Interfratnerity Council of The University of the South

Article I. Hazing

Section 1. Hazing of anyone by any fraternity chapter or member is prohibited. "Hazing" is defined as recklessly or intentionally doing any act or causing any situation which endangers or is likely to endanger the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or which tends to humiliate, degrade, intimidate, or cause serious physical or emotional discomfort to a student. Hazing includes, but is not limited to, such acts as requiring a student to submit to any of the following:
(a) Calisthenics;
(b) Nudity;
(c) Consumption of any substance, especially alcohol or other drugs;
(d) Wearing or carrying any obscene, offensive, or physically burdensome article;
(e) Physical assaults or offensive physical contact;
(f) Contests of strength, bravery, or endurance;
(g) Transportation to and abandonment in a remote, unfamiliar, or unsafe area;
(h) Confinement to an unreasonably small, noisy, unventilated, unsanitary, or unlighted area;
(i) Performing pranks or criminal offenses;
(j) Personal servitude;
(k) Sexual acts or indecent ordeal;
(l) Branding or tattooing;
(m) Infliction of pain, fear, or mental anguish;
(n) Deprivation of sleep, food,water, medication, or sanitary facilities;
(o) Solitary confinement;
(p) Automotive contests of speed or daring;
(q) Blindfolding for an unreasonable;
(r) Verbal abuse or insults;
(s) Public ridicule;
(t) Paddling;
(u) Exposure to the elements or to extreme temperatures;
(v) Bright lights;
(w) "Hell" sessions;
(x) Treasure or scavenger hunting;
(y) Unreasonable interrogation; or
(z) Unnecessary work duties.

Section 2. Violations of these policies and rulesshall be adjudicated by the Interfraternity Judicial Board.
