Parking Policy

2010-2011

Parking at Sewanee:  Every day, thousands of people drive, walk, and bicycle on streets that are owned by the University, Franklin County, and the State of Tennessee.
  To ensure safety, efficiency, consistency, and aesthetics, the University has developed a comprehensive parking policy that serves our needs and addresses our concerns.  This policy is reviewed frequently and amended as necessary.  Your understanding and compliance with the Parking Policy is helpful and appreciated and will make Sewanee a better place to live and grow.

General Student Parking Regulations:

1.  On Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, student parking is restricted to the designated area for each residence hall.
2.  Students living in some off-campus locations may park on-campus only behind Fulford Hall in the white-lined spaces.
3.  Blue-lined spaces designate faculty and staff parking only.  Student employees may not park in blue-lined spaces.  During the week after 5:00 pm and on weekends students may park in blue spaces.
4.  Parking behind the library is for staff and school of theology students only from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
5.  Vehicles are prohibited from backing into parking spaces (head in only).
6.  Parallel parking: vehicles must face the appropriate direction and right-hand wheels of vehicles must be within18 inches of the right-hand curb.
7.  Parking is prohibited in the following locations:
    •  Along a yellow line or yellow curb;
    •  In front of garbage bins, on the grass, and in service spaces (except for University marked vehicles);
    •  In handicap spaces (except for vehicles displaying a handicap tag from the state of registration or a temporary permit issued by the Sewanee Police);
    •  In spots identified as head resident spaces (except for vehicles belonging to a head resident) and service vehicle parking spaces;
    •  In front of the University Bookstore except for the customers of the Bookstore and the Tiger Pantry from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., seven days per week.  A 30-minute or 1-hour time limit, depending upon the marking on the space, will be strictly enforced.  These spaces may not be used for other purposes such as dining at McClurg Hall or class attendance.

Residence Hall Parking Regulations

Bairnwick – Benedict – Russian House – Spanish House: Parking is available in the lot between Mississippi Avenue and Hall Street and in the Russian House and Women’s Center lots.  There are also 4 lined spaces on the left side of the alley between Benedict and Mr. Core’s lease available for smaller vehicles.  All of these spaces are lined spaces on asphalt.  (The gravel parking behind the Delt Tau Delta House is limited to the residents of the Delt House.  Also, parking directly behind the Hospitality Shop is reserved for Hospitality Shop patrons.  Students are not permitted to park in those spaces.)

Cannon:  Parking for Cannon is in the rear of the dorm, along the West side of the building and on the South side of South Carolina Avenue across the street from the dorm.  All spaces are lined spaces on asphalt.

Cleveland:  Parking for Cleveland is located in the white-lined spaces along the drive and the rear of Cleveland.  All legal parking spaces behind Cleveland are “Marked Spaces” if the space is not marked it is not a legal parking space.  Parking along Tennessee Avenue and University Avenue is shared with Tuckaway, Hunter, and Elliott.  Parallel parking spaces are available in the gravel area directly in front of Cleveland along Tennessee Avenue.  In that area and elsewhere, parking is prohibited on any part of the yellow line.

Courts:  Parking for Courts is located in the paved parking lot in front of the dorm, along Hall Street, and at the rear of the dorm.  The spaces in front of the building are lined spaces on asphalt.  The spaces along Hall Street are gravel and the vehicle must have all four wheels off the asphalt.  Parking on the lake side of Courts is prohibited next to the water’s edge.  Parking in the rear of Courts off the asphalt is prohibited.  Overflow parking is available in the lot between Trezevant Hall and the hospital. Troublespots:  Along Hall Street many students park on the yellow line, toward Georgia Avenue which is prohibited.  Students are also ticketed for illegal parallel parking. (Basically, vehicles are ticketed for parking their vehicle facing the wrong direction or for not being off the road enough.)

Elliott:  Parking for Elliott is located in the paved lot immediately behind the dorm.  It is also found in the gravel lot on the North side of Sada Elliott Place, along both sides of University Avenue from Mitchell towards the Bookstore and from Mitchell towards downtown.  The University Avenue parking is shared with Hunter, Cleveland, and Tuckaway.  Troublespots:  Parking off the asphalt behind Elliott is prohibited.  All spaces behind Elliott are lined spaces.  Vehicles are frequently ticketed for incorrect parallel parking in front of Elliott and along University Avenue.

EMS House:  Parking for the EMS House is in the paved circular drive in front of the house, in the gravel drive on the South end of the house and across the street in the new parking lot.

Fraternity Houses:  All fraternity houses (except Beta Theta Pi and Gamma Sigma Phi) are lease-holders, and parking lots at those locations are controlled by fraternities.  The police will not issue citations unless the fraternity complains or if cars are parked in areas not intended for parking, namely lawns.  (Gamma Sigma Phi and Beta Theta Pi have parking immediately in front of the house for residents.)  Alpha Tau Omega and Phi Kappa Epsilon may park on their side of University Avenue.  Troublespots:  Again, parking on the lawn of any Greek house is prohibited.  The only people allowed to park at the Beta Theta Pi house from 8 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday are the students living in the house.  At the Alpha Tau Omega house, parking on the lawn and anywhere between Johnson and the ATO house off University Avenue is prohibited.

French House:  French House residents may park in the gravel lot behind the house.  Vehicles are not permitted to block the circle drive.

Gorgas – Quintard:  Parking for these two dorms is found along the southeast side of Tennessee Avenue, in white-lined spaces immediately in front of the dorms and in the small lot (known by students as “heaven”) between Gorgas and Cravens Hall. The large lot behind Gorgas and Quintard (known by students as “hell”) is also available to residents.  Parking is prohibited near the Chapel of the Apostles and behind Hamilton Hall. Troublespots:  Vehicles parked (even “temporarily”) in the service area or in the driveway near the front entrance to the dorms are blocking a fire lane and will be cited and towed if necessary.

Hodgson – Phillips – Emery:  These three dorms share the parking beside Hodgson-Emery and the parking in front of Phillips.  All parking in this area, except in the rear of the small red brick apartments, is asphalt and has parking spaces lined off. There are no legal spaces other than the lined spaces on the asphalt.  Parking on the gravel in the rear of the small red brick apartments is restricted to residents of those apartments.  Troublespots: Do not park in the roadway which makes a circle at the top of the hill on South Carolina Avenue.  The roadway leads into the parking lot.  Community members complain about this area quite often.

Hoffman - St. Luke's:  Parking for these two residence halls is in the paved parking lot across from Benedict and in the paved lot between Mississippi Avenue and Hall Street and in the Russian House and Women’s Center lots.  Troublespots:  Students park behind Hoffman near the garbage, and after marked spaces are taken, others park next to them, blocking the roadway and creating a problem for emergency vehicles.

Humphreys:  Parking for Humphreys Hall is located in the paved parking lot immediately to the rear of the building.  All spaces are white-lined and are located on asphalt. Parking off the asphalt is prohibited.  Overflow parking is available in the gravel lot in front of the Russian House and in the lot between Mississippi Avenue and Hall Street.  Troublespots:  Parking on the lawn next to Mississippi Avenue is prohibited.  Temporary parking in the head resident space or service space is also prohibited.

Hunter:  Parking for Hunter is located in the paved parking lot on the Northeast side of the building, and along both sides of University Avenue, from Mitchell Avenue south towards downtown and north towards the Bookstore. The University Avenue parking is shared with Elliott, Cleveland, and Tuckaway.

Johnson:  Parking for Johnson is available in the paved lot at the rear of the residence hall; all spaces are lined spaces on asphalt.  Residents may also park on their side of University Avenue.  Overflow parking can be accommodated in the new lot behind Benedict between Mississippi Avenue and Hall Street.  Troublespots:  Parking near the back entrance to the dorm is prohibited.

McCrady & Green House:  Parking for these areas will be located in the parking lot on Alabama Avenue, south of the University apartments.  Parking on the grass in the areas surrounding McCrady is prohibited.

Outreach House:  Parking is available in lined and/or clearly identified spots around the house.  Overflow parking is available in the Alabama parking lot south of the University apartments on Alabama.

Sorority Houses:  Most parking is available in gravel lots around the sorority houses or apartments.  Parking on the grass is prohibited.

-Since a sidewalk has been completed, the residents of TKP must now walk to the central campus like residents of all other residence halls.
-For the sorority houses on Mississippi Avenue, overflow parking is available in the lot between Mississippi Avenue and Hall Street.
-PKE sorority residents may park FOUR vehicles in their side parking area.  Additional cars can park on their side of University Avenue.  Overflow parking can be accommodated in the new lot behind Benedict between Mississippi Avenue and Hall Street.  Troublespots: No more than four cars can park in the lot next to their house.
-Non-residents of a sorority house may not park at their sorority house between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Trezevant:  Parking at Trezevant is in the paved parking lot in front of the dorm and the new gravel lot immediately behind the dorm.  Parking along Parson’s Drive and in the gravel lot across the street in front of the dorm (the IM field parking) is prohibited.

Tuckaway:  Parking for Tuckaway is located in front of the dorm on Tennessee Avenue, on the right side of the drive leading to the parking lot in the rear of the dorm, and on the asphalt lot behind the dorm.  The gravel parking lot on the East side of Tennessee Avenue is shared with Elliott and Cleveland.  Parking on University Avenue is shared with Cleveland, Hunter, and Elliott.  Important note: Private drives are not to be blocked and parking off the asphalt in the rear of the dorm is prohibited.

Wiggins:  Parking at Wiggins is located on the South East side of the building in a paved lot. Parking off the asphalt is prohibited.

NOTE:  The parking rules do not change to accommodate students who are studying for comprehensive exams nor do they change for final examinations.

Penalties for Parking Violations:  Violators of the parking restrictions will be fined $10–$25 for a first offense.  A second violation per semester results in the regular fine for an offense, plus $50.  Subsequent violations result in the regular fine plus $100.  In addition, violators will be responsible for the cost of towing, if at the discretion of the police department towing is required.  All traffic violations are the responsibility of the owner of the vehicle.  Penalties for parking violations will only be charged against the owner of a vehicle and not another person responsible for the violation.  All traffic tickets are charged to the student’s account.

Appeal Process:  Appeals from fines will be heard by the Traffic Appeals Committee, which is comprised of faculty, staff, police, and students. Appeals must be submitted using the online form (www2.sewanee.edu/trafficappeal), and must be submitted within 48 hours of the citation. Incomplete appeals and/or appeals submitted after the 48 hour deadline will not be considered.
